Brevard County Representative
Curt Smith was re-elected to the Brevard County Commission in November of 2018 with 62% of the vote. He is a fiscal conservative serving the county as a Commissioner since 2014. He came from the private sector with 40 years of small business and entrepreneurial experience. In his first term as a Commissioner he served as the Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners and as Chairman of the Board of the Indian River Lagoon Council, a National Estuary Program consisting of a 5 county consortium including Volusia, Brevard, Indian River, Martin and St Lucie Counties.
Curt is a graduate of the University of Miami and while there, was a member of the SAE fraternity. Some of the major accomplishments in his first term included getting Brevard represented on the Central Florida Expressway Authority. While he was Chairman of the Brevard Board of County Commissioners he presented his case in 2017 for Brevard’s inclusion to the Authority. The Expressway Authority listened to his proposal and voted unanimously to accept Brevard as its newest member. Other accomplishments include traveling to Washington D.C. and working with Congressman Bill Posey and Senator Marco Rubio to get fast track permitting for dredging projects for the Indian River Lagoon. He also worked with the Economic Develop Commission to bring jobs and businesses to the Space Coast. In his first term, 23 companies moved to Brevard with more than 3500 jobs. Curt increased road paving projects while he was Chairman from 12 miles a year to 57 miles without raising taxes. Curt is also a staunch supporter of Brevard’s outstanding First Responders – the Sheriff’s Department and the Professional Firefighters.
Curt has always been civic minded. Some of his many associations in Brevard County include Rotary International, Board of Directors of Friends of Sally’s House as well as supporting Brevard Little League, Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and supporting efforts to restore the Indian River Lagoon.
Curt and his wife Linda have been residents of Melbourne since 1986, They have one daughter and three grandchildren.Back to Governing Board
