E-PASS is here to help you go cashless as the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) transitions to a cashless system before the end of 2025.

These changes will make your driver smoother, safer, and more efficient as you travel on the expressway. As part of this transition, some customers will experience changes to how they pay for tolls or manage their E-PASS account. For a majority of the customers who use our system, not much will change.

What is Cashless Tolling?

Cashless Tolling, also referred to as All Electronic Tolling (AET), is a hassle-free way to pay tolls without stopping at a toll booth. Instead of slowing down or waiting in line, drivers continue at highway speeds while tolls are collected electronically.  As you pass under overhead structures—called gantries—advanced technology detects your vehicle, classifies it, and processes the toll automatically.

As we make this transition, cash will no longer be accepted at toll booths or toll machines. For customers who have utilized our Reload Lanes, we are expanding your options that will allow you to manage your account digitally anytime, anywhere. Learn more here.

How will this impact how I pay tolls?

There are two ways to pay:

E-PASS or Compatible Transponder

As you drive through a tolling point with an E-PASS transponder, our system automatically detects your vehicle, calculates the toll, and deducts it from your prepaid E-PASS account—all without stopping. E-PASS customers enjoy toll discounts and pay the lowest toll rates, with savings of up to 50% compared to Pay By Plate toll rates.

Already an E-PASS customer? You are all set.  Not much will change for you.

Pay By Plate

No need to stop at toll points—simply drive through, and our system will capture an image of your license plate. An invoice will then be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner for payment. Pay By Plate toll invoicing does not include the discounted toll rates or the benefits of E-PASS.

Not yet an E-PASS customer? We recommend you switch to save up to 50% on tolls compared to Pay By Plate. Funds on your E-PASS account never expire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this change immediate? How much time do I have?

The transition to cashless tolling on our system will not happen overnight. We are committed to being responsive to the needs of our customers – the drivers who use our roads. There will be a thoughtful and phased approach to reach our goal of 100% cashless tolling at our mainline plazas and ramps by the end of 2025. We encourage drivers to visit: https://www.cfxway.com/cashlesstolling/  for more information and to learn how to go cashless.

Why is this happening?

These changes will make your driver smoother, safer, and more efficient as you travel on the expressway. More than 98% of current toll transactions on the CFX system are cashless, clearly indicating that drivers overwhelmingly prefer to pay electronically for tolls through E-PASS or other electronic collection methods.

Where is this happening?

All expressways owned by the Central Florida Expressway Authority will be cashless before the end of 2025. Over the years, a majority of the tolling industry across the U.S., including toll agencies in Florida, have transitioned to a cashless payment system, called all electronic tolling (AET). Some local roads, including parts of Florida’s Turnpike that connect to the CFX system, have already made this transition. To view a map, visit: https://www.cfxway.com/cashlesstolling/.

Will I get a bill if I do not have an E-PASS (compatible transponder)?

Yes. You will receive an invoice in the mail called a Pay By Plate. The invoice will then be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner for payment. To prevent a hold on your vehicle tag registration drivers should pay within 30 days. Additionally, unpaid toll invoices could result in a hold on your vehicle tag registration or driver’s license renewal.

How can I pay the toll if I am in a rental vehicle or from out of town?

Option 1: Visitor Toll Pass™ (Available at Orlando International Airport):

  • Offered by the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX)
  • Free to use
  • Includes a temporary hang tag for your rearview mirror
  • Lets you pay tolls electronically at the lowest possible rate
  • Avoids extra fees from rental car toll programs
  • Valid on all toll roads throughout Florida

Option 2: Using Your Own Uni in a Rental Car:

  • You may transfer your Uni transponder to a rental car if:
    • The vehicle class is the same (e.g., both are two-axle vehicles)
    • You inform the rental agency you’re using your own device
    • You update your toll account with the rental car’s license plate
  • If tolls are unpaid:
    • CFX will send a Pay By Plate invoice to the rental company
    • The rental company will charge you for the Pay By Plate tolls
    • Additional service fees may also be applied by the rental company
    • Pay By Plate rates are double the E-PASS electronic rates

What if I use the Reload Lanes?

Reload Lanes will still be available throughout 2025; however, the Central Florida Expressway is moving toward a cashless tolling system. While some lanes will continue to accept in-lane reloads for now, we encourage drivers to prepare for the upcoming cashless system. If you don’t have an E-PASS yet, now is the perfect time to get one for a faster, more convenient, and cost-effective way to travel. Discover which transponder is right for you!
