The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) began design work of the State Road 408 Capacity Improvements project from Kirkman Road to Church Street in May, 2025. This project is being developed to help improve traffic flow along 3 miles of this crucial corridor.
More than 164,000 vehicles per day travel on SR 408 near downtown Orlando. CFX is designing improvements that will improve traffic flow by adding an eastbound lane from Kirkman Road to Church Street, and a westbound lane from John Young Parkway to Kirkman Road.
Most of the work will occur within SR 408’s existing right of way.
Design start: July 2023
Anticipated design completion: Early 2026

Project History
In September 2022, CFX began conducting a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study for capacity improvements to SR 408 between Kirkman Road and Church Street.
The study evaluated alternatives for improving traffic flow by adding an eastbound lane from Kirkman Road to Church Street and a westbound lane from John Young Parkway to Kirkman Road.
The project was included in the following CFX plans and studies:
- CFX Visioning + 2045 Master Plan – 2022
- CFX Five-Year Work Plan FY2024-FY2028
- PD&E Study Completed – 2023
About Public Involvement
Public involvement and interagency coordination are an integral part of the design process and opportunities for public participation will be provided. CFX anticipates holding 90 percent plans public meeting prior to the start of construction.
