The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) will be investing $4.17 billion in the Central Florida region over the next 5 years. The CFX Board unanimously adopted the 2025-2029 Five-Year Work Plan on May 9, 2024. As a regional transportation agency, this major investment by CFX will help with critical infrastructure improvements and expansion projects to deliver a world-class mobility network that addresses the population and traffic growth in one of the fastest growing regions in the nation.
The new Five-Year Work Plan is broken out into ten categories which outline how CFX will continue to provide an integrated mobility network in a fiscally sound manner that drives economic growth and improves quality of life. The plan’s three largest categories include:
• System Expansion Projects – $2.9 billion
• System Improvements Projects – $627 million
• Interchange Projects – $284 million
Specifically, the new Five-Year Work Plan will:
• Deliver the SR 538 Poinciana Parkway Extension, the SR 516 Lake/Orange Expressway, SR 534 Osceola Parkway Extension between SR 417 and Nova Road, and the SR 414 Expressway Extension through year eight of the fifteen-year planning period.
• Widen 50 miles of CFX’s current 125-mile expressway system, add 28 miles of new expressways, and resurface 43 miles of the existing expressway.
• Complete the deployment of CFX’s Wrong Way Driver Detection System at all existing off ramp locations on CFX’s expressway system.
• Continue implementation of CFX’s Sustainability Program including new solar projects at six mainline plazas.
CFX Chairman and Osceola County Commissioner Brandon Arrington noted that the State of Florida mandates that the development of roads falls on local government. He said of the Work Plan, “I am proud to see that this agency has such a regional vision that will deliver critical projects to help keep Central Florida moving.”
Notably, all CFX operations are funded solely by tolls. Tolls collected on CFX expressways are reinvested locally, funding the maintenance, operations and expansion of our expressway system. The Five-Year Work Plan is the actionable extension of the long-range CFX Master Plan, which guides future operations and long-range capital investment decisions to improve the mobility and accessibility of Central Florida residents and visitors.
