Central Florida Expressway Authority Kicks-Off Safety Campaign Supporting Local College Student
Orlando, FL (July 19, 2024) – The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) is furthering its mission to advance roadway safety by distributing free emergency roadside lights to drivers. CFX’s Road Rangers will distribute the safety lights to drivers they are assisting on the expressway system. The initiative supports Haley’s Light, a non-profit committed to raising awareness about highway safety and providing crucial information on how to navigate safely around a disabled vehicle. The non-profit was started in 2023 after Haley Boggs – a local Central Florida college student – was killed on a road trip in Pennsylvania when her car broke down on the side of the road.
The roadside emergency lights are designed to illuminate a vehicle stopped on the side of the road. In January, Florida expanded its Move Over Law to include disabled vehicles that are stopped on the side of the road and displaying hazard lights, emergency flares, emergency signage or a person is visible outside the vehicle. Florida’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over a lane when vehicles are stopped on the shoulder or drop their speed 20mph less than the posted speed limit or 5mph when the speed limit is 20mph or less.
“These lights were designed in memory of Haley, a vibrant 21-year-old who lost her life tragically in a nighttime roadside crash by a driver who did not see her stopped vehicle,” said Brook Stealey, Haley’s mother. “Through Haley’s Light, our mission is to provide a safe, simple solution to protect the lives of others in hazardous roadside situations. In doing so, Haley’s light shines on.”
Haley’s Lights are bright, LED safety lights that illuminate a vehicle ensuring other drivers see the car and move over to avoid a secondary crash.
“This powerful, yet simple, solution has the ability to remind people to move over for drivers who are stopped on the roadway after dark,” said Michelle Maikisch, CFX Executive Director. “Utilizing our Road Rangers to distribute these lights to the drivers they are assisting on the side of the road is just one way we can make our roads safe for everyone whether they are traveling on our system or elsewhere.”
