November 10, 2025 (Orlando, FL) – CFX’s State Road 417 widening project from International Drive to John Young Parkway received the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Central Florida’s 2025 Project of the Year in the $30M–$100M category.
The 4.1-mile project widened SR 417 from four to six lanes and introduced the first Flex Lanes in the Southeastern United States. Utilizing dynamic overhead signs, lane-use control signals, and variable speed limit technology, the Flex Lanes provide an incident management strategy that allows traffic to bypass crashes or closures using a reinforced median shoulder. The project also included the widening of eight mainline bridges, extensive Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) upgrades, and innovative construction techniques to minimize travel impacts during construction.
Completed in August 2024, the $86.9 million project enhances safety, improves mobility, and supports regional growth. It also featured extensive community outreach, bilingual education campaigns, and aesthetic enhancements such as new noise walls, lighting, and landscaping, reinforcing CFX’s commitment to leading the region with next-generation transportation solutions.
The recognition from ASHE Central Florida is one of three awards CFX has received for its innovative approach to delivering projects that meet the region’s exponential growth while balancing increasing capacity and enhancing safety for one of its expressways. In June 2025, the Transportation Expressway Authority Membership of Florida (TEAMFL) and the Florida Transportation Builders’ Association (FTBA) recognized the SR 417 Widening project with the Expressway Project of the Year Award for “excellent contributions of construction contractors which help to maintain Florida’s prominent role as a leader in transportation.” In August, 2025 the same project was recognized by the Public Relations Society of America for outstanding stakeholder engagement.
