CFX MARKS MAJOR MILESTONE WITH COMPLETION OF A SR 417 WIDENING PROJECT

(Orange County, FL) – The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) has completed work on a project to widen State Road 417 (Central Florida GreeneWay) between Econlockhatchee Trail to where CFX’s system ends at the Seminole County line. This $44.8 million project widened a 3.2-mile segment of SR 417 from four to six travel lanes and added additional open road tolling lanes at the SR 417 University Main Plaza — for a total of three in each direction.

“Historically, the northern corridor of SR 417 has been one of the busiest locations on our system because of the ever-increasing numbers of commuters traveling from Seminole and Volusia Counties,” said CFX Executive Director Laura Kelley. “The completion of this project, along with the recent completion of the SR 417/SR 408 interchange, means improved connectivity for the Central Florida community and reduced travel times for our customers.”

The culmination of this project marks a major milestone in CFX’s decade-long initiative to widen and improve the 12-mile northern corridor of SR 417 from State Road 528 (Beachline Expressway) to the Orange/Seminole County line. The initiative began in 2010 with the widening of SR 417 from SR 528 to Curry Ford Road and continued northward in segments to reduce the impact to motorists. The SR 417 widening initiative also featured the addition of dedicated E-PASS lanes at the plazas, reconfigured ramps to improve traffic flow at the interchanges, efficient roadway lighting, improved signage, and sound walls to minimize traffic noise for the nearby residential communities.

CFX is now preparing to widen the southern corridor of SR 417, which has seen traffic volumes double in just the past five years. This southern SR 417 widening initiative, located between International Drive and SR 528, will be built in five segments to reduce the impact to drivers. Work on the first segments, located between International Drive and Landstar Boulevard, will begin in early 2021. CFX anticipates the widening of the SR 417 southern corridor will be complete in late 2023.
