Public Workshop Announced For State Road 408 Eastern Extension Study

The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) will hold an Alternatives Public Workshop for the State Road 408 (Spessard Holland East-West Expressway) Eastern Extension Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate alternatives for the proposed extension of State Road 408 from State Road 50 (East Colonial Drive) to the State Road 50/State Road 520 intersection in east Orange County.

The meeting will be held in an open house format on Thursday, June 8, 2017, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Corner Lake Middle School, located at 1700 Chuluota Road, Orlando, Florida 32820. Attendees will be able to review maps, drawings and other pertinent information, and provide comments. Members of the PD&E Study team will also be available at the informal meeting to answer questions. There will be no formal program or presentation.

About CFX’s State Road 408 Eastern Extension PD&E Study

In May 2015, CFX began a PD&E Study for the proposed State Road 408 Eastern Extension to the State Road 520 intersection in East Orange County. That study indicated that the most feasible location for the future eastern extension of State Road 408 was along the existing State Road 50 corridor. However, in May 2016, the Florida Department of Transportation notified CFX that we would not be able to utilize their State Road 50 right-of-way for the State Road 408 extension. As a result, in November 2016, CFX initiated a new PD&E Study with an expanded study area to evaluate the potential of an alternate corridor that would address the regional transportation needs while minimizing impacts to the natural, physical and cultural environments.

Recently, in a separate effort, the Florida Department of Transportation initiated a “Colonial Parkway” PD&E Study to reevaluate transportation improvements along the State Road 50/East Colonial Drive corridor from State Road 408 to State Road 50.
